Description

The snake game is one of those games which I loved playing on my mom's or uncle's Nokia cell phone. I could spend hours on it and still don't get bored 🐍

Today I feel super amazing and nostalgic seeing myself build this game 🥰

If you haven't played it before, the game rule is very simple. You move your snake around the board using the ARROW KEYS and try to eat the fruit while being careful about eating yourself or hitting the wall 😅

Motivation

I am a freelancer and I have moved to a new platform Kwork.

There I am providing service PC Game In Godot on one of my Kwork page.

I was noticing that my old portfolio was getting old and no longer properly reflects my skillset that and also that I moved to a new platformer, I have decided to build new games to add to my portfolio.

This game is sample/demo of my Bite Size Games package on my Kwork page, where I build short/mini games for my customers.

Challenge

Now from a developer's perspective it was a bit trickier than I thought initially.

One of the most tricky part for me was how the snake turns?

It turns out, How I was thinking the snake should move was very different it actually does.

Thanks to God I found an explaination video on YouTube by Code Explained and then I understood how to move the snake.

If you want more descriptive answer, you can simply checkout Code Explained video above but in short, the trick was to remove the tail and move the head one step ahead in the direction the snake was moving in or just turned in 😁

Software Used

I have used the Godot game engine to build the game and I have used some icons and audio assets from Kenney Asset Bundles 1, 2 & 3 these are not updated now I think They have more new bundles now, I have old ones from few years ago.

I have also used Aseprite for making snake and fruit sprites as well as for doing some editing work like adjusting Kenney's trophy icon's spacing from the edges etc.

The game is published on Itch.io with Web, Windows and Linux platforms.
